Utahraptor

Utahraptor Description

Utahraptor (“Utah’s thief”) was the largest known member of the dromaeosaurid family, a group of bird-like carnivorous dinosaurs, and lived during the early Cretaceous period. Known for being much larger and more heavily built than its relatives, such as Velociraptor, it was a formidable predator in its ecosystem.

Could You Outrun a Utahraptor?

Utahraptor speed estimates vary, but it was a fast, agile predator, likely reaching bursts of 20–30 mph (32–48 km/h). However, its bulky build suggests it was a sprinter or ambush hunter, not a long-distance runner, using short, powerful bursts to overwhelm prey like Iguanodon or Gastonia. Its short legs were built for quick acceleration and powerful leaps, not for marathon chases, relying on its size, claws, and potential pack tactics to secure kills.

Are You Bigger Than a Utahraptor?

Utahraptor was the largest raptor, a bulky predator around 20-23 feet (6-7 meters) long, standing 5-6 feet (1.5-2 meters) tall at the hip, and weighing up to 1,100 pounds (500 kg), making it roughly the size of a grizzly bear with powerful legs and a massive sickle claw for ambush hunting large prey in the Early Cretaceous period. It had a bite force of around 5000 newtons, making Utahraptor a very effective killer.
