Could You Outrun a Procompsognathus?
The Procompsognathus genus, or “compies”, was incredibly fast for its size, with estimates placing its top speed around 40 mph (64 km/h), making it faster than an ostrich and capable of outrunning larger predators. This agility came from its lightweight build, long legs for big strides, and a tail for balance, allowing it to hunt small prey like lizards and insects efficiently in the Late Jurassic. Of course, due to its size, it had a very weak bite force, and in contrast to some media depictions, it did not have a venomous bite
Are You Bigger Than a Procompsognathus?
A human is significantly bigger than a Procompsognathus. The dinosaur was a very small, bipedal animal, roughly the size of a large chicken or goose. Procompsognathus typically measured around 1 to 1.2 meters (3.3 to 3.9 feet) in length (from nose to tail-tip) and stood about 25-30 centimeters (10-12 inches) high at the hip. Its weight was only around 1-4.5 kilograms (2.2-10 pounds).
Fun Facts
- Procompsognathus means “Before the Elegant Jaw” (or before Compsognathus)
- The only known fossil specimen is incomplete and crushed
- It was not a pack hunter but instead a swift, opportunistic hunter
- It held early ancestry clues to the evolution of birds
- Procompsognathus is more closely related to Coelophysis than Compsognathus
