Camptosaurus Description
Camptosaurus was a medium-sized, heavily built plant-eating dinosaur that roamed North America and Europe during the Late Jurassic period. Belonging to the ornithopod family, it is recognized by paleontologists as an important evolutionary link between smaller two-legged runners and the massive, duck-billed hadrosaurs that came later. Its name translates to “bent lizard,” a reference to the distinctly curved profile of its spine.

These prehistoric herbivores typically stretched between 16 and 25 feet (5 to 7.5 meters) in length from beak to tail and stood roughly 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall at the hips, making them significantly longer and taller than almost any person. In terms of weight, a fully grown individual tipped the scales anywhere from 1,100 to 2,200 pounds (500 to 1,000 kg)—which is highly comparable to the mass of a modern compact car or a small rhinoceros. Standing next to one, you would feel incredibly small up against its exceptionally robust, bulky frame.
